Caldwell Environmental Commission Summary 2014
Earth Day Arbor Day
The Commission had a Recycle Day on May 3, 2014. We distributed recycle bins to residents, had a bike swap, face painting, put up the contest entries in the Caldwell Borough chambers – the winners were announced. Tree seedlings were distributed by the Bartlett tree company. We sold rain barrels and compost bins. A Redbud tree was planted on the open space area near Ryerson Ave.
A workshop was offered in June on the use of the compost bins by Jeffrey Brown.
We continued on to complete documentation of actions for the Bronze level certification. Caldwell was awarded Bronze level on Nov 18 2014 at the League of Municipalities luncheon. Our actions are listed on our application on the Sustainable Jersey website. This award was presented at the same time we announced our Sustainability Awards at the December 2nd 2014 Council meeting.
Caldwell completed an update of the ERI with encouragement of the Caldwell Environmental Commission– one of the priority actions for Sustainable Jersey. This was completed in September, 2014.
We partnered with the Ecology Club at the Middle School to promote anti-idling and did a presentation to the seniors on anti-idling and Project Medicine Drop. We are continuing to work with the students on anti-idling activities.
2 Clean-up days for the Connie Stewart Garden were held – one with commissioners and one with the high school EPC students.
In December, we awarded 2 Sustainability Awards to Willing Hearts and Mario BiFalco. We have continued this tradition as they are gifts to the community.
We arranged several meeting with PSEG about their Solar 4 All Program, Rutgers, representatives from Advanced Solar Projects with the Mayor and Sewer Plant reps. We presented information to the Council about the possibility of having solar panels at the sewer plant in June. A resolution to go out for a RFP was passed in the fall and the RFP will be announced in December.
